A 70-year-old man is recovering after a brutal attack Sunday morning as he walked to the Sikh Cultural Society in Queens, according to police.
Nirmal Singh was repeatedly punched in the face by an unknown attacker around 6:45 a.m. while walking on 95th Avenue, near Lefferts Boulevard, in South Richmond Hill, police said.
The attacker approached from behind, according to Singh’s translator, Harpreet Singh Toor, and fled the scene without saying a word.
Singh – a tourist visiting from India – was left bloodied from the attack but was able to walk back to the cultural center, where he has been staying since he arrived in New York City.
At the temple, a good Samaritan noticed he was injured and called for an ambulance, Toor said.
Singh was transported to Jamaica Hospital where he was treated for pain and a laceration to the face, according to police.
Toor said Singh insisted he would recognize his attacker and has looked through hundreds of photos in an attempt to identify the person responsible.
Authorities said no arrests have been made and investigators are searching for surveillance footage of the attack.
The incident is being investigated as a hate crime, according to the NYPD.
